Ukrainian authorities say the Russian military carried out the rocket attack. Moscow has yet to respond to those allegations, but has said since the invasion began in February 2022 that its forces are not targeting civilian targets. President Volodymyr Zelensky said in his daily video message about the attack: “Such terror proves to us and to the whole world time and time again that Russia deserves only one thing for all its actions: defeat and a court.”

Two Dutchmen were in the building when the attack happened, Franky van Hintum and Coen van Oosten, who are in Kramatorsk because they make free french fries for Ukrainians in their french fries cart. On tmore white people posted a videomoments after impact. “We couldn’t get out of the hall anymore. There was rubble everywhere. We were also completely covered in blood, including glass shards, but we mostly have scratches,” Van Hintum tells NOS.

Kramatorsk is the largest city in the Donetsk region still under Ukrainian control. About 150,000 people live there. The city has often been the target of attacks by Russian forces, who want to seize all of Donetsk. In April 2022, an attack on the city’s train station killed 63 people.
