They said 82 dead… Remarkable statement on the disaster
Nearly 200 Pakistanis were claimed to have lost their lives on the ship that sank in the migrant disaster that took place in Greece last week.
Last week, at least 209 Pakistanis were on an overloaded boat carrying irregular migrants off the coast of Greece, according to data shared by Pakistani investigative agency Reuters. This number was based on information and DNA samples provided by the families of the missing who boarded the ship from Libya to Greece.
The official death toll as a result of the crash was announced at 82 and it was reported that many people could not be contacted. Of the 104 rescued, 12 are Pakistanis. There were also many Kashmiris on board.
“An investigation is underway to confirm these data,” Rana Abdul Jabbar, regional director of Pakistan’s Federal Bureau of Investigation in Islamabad, told Reuters.
MANY PEOPLE LOST
The incident, which is believed to have killed hundreds of people from different countries, is seen as the worst migration disaster in the region. According to witness testimonies, it is claimed that between 400 and 750 people were trapped in the 20 to 30 meter long fishing boat and the vessel sank due to overloading.
Pakistani authorities announced that 29 suspected human traffickers have so far been arrested in the country.
