Ukraine’s accession to the EU is still a long way off. This has become clear once again now that the EU has announced that Kiev can only tick two of the seven conditions for the time being. “The country must meet these conditions before negotiations can even begin,” Hammelburg said.
“In terms of improving the legal system and the position of the media, Kyiv is doing well”
Ukraine is already doing some things very well, says the foreign commentator: “like improving the legal system, and also the position of the media.” But on the other hand, it still goes completely wrong with issues like bribery and bribery.
Pat on the back or reality check?
“You might see it as a pat on the back,” says Hammelburg, “but it’s mostly a sign that it’s not a matter of months, but many years.”
He also expects NATO membership will not be a storm. “Kiev certainly shouldn’t expect an invitation this summer.” Many NATO members are doing their best, “but it just won’t work for now.”
Hammelburg: ‘Imagine. You have a country that is partly owned by a pro-Western government, but partly isn’t. And we don’t know exactly how it will end. You have to take into account that a piece of Ukraine will remain Russian in the end. The whole construction is pushing many NATO members under the curtain.’
