African leaders visit Zelensky and Putin: ‘Consequences of war widely felt in Africa’ Related articles

Leaders from among others African countries Uganda, Senegal, Zambia, Egypt and South Africa are visiting President Volodimir Zelensky in Ukraine. The purpose of the visit is to establish peace between Ukraine and Russia. “An Africa that will bring peace to Europe, we have obviously never heard of before,” says African journalist Arne Doornebal.

According to the journalist, the leaders’ visit demonstrates that African countries have ‘a growing importance on the world scene’. Furthermore, countries also have a great interest in establishing peace. They have nothing to do with war. The consequences are widely felt on the continent, one thinks of course of the grain prices which rose enormously at the beginning of the war».

At that time, countries were therefore afraid of social unrest. «Especially in North Africa, because bread has become more expensive. Even the World Food Program could barely get grain, and even there gasoline prices were rising.’ However, the problems aren’t over yet. “They want a solution.”

No overt support

Visiting countries is surprising, because they don’t actively support Ukraine. Even some leaders of African countries have come out in support of Putin. ‘The mission is mainly led by South Africa, while that country was recently accused of supplying arms to Russia,’ Doornebal points out.

The leaders themselves also realize that it is unrealistic for African countries to bring about peace, Doornebal suspects. “They are small steps, starting with extending the wheat deal and clarifying their position.”

After visiting Ukraine, the leaders will continue their journey to Moscow to meet with Putin.
