Ethnic conflict intensifies in India: death toll exceeds 100

In the Indian state of Manipur, the number of people who lost their lives in violence that began because the Meitei community was not included in the “planned tribe” category rose to 110.

According to Hindustan Times news, clashes broke out when gunmen raided the city of Agijang last night. While the police announced that 9 people lost their lives in the conflict and 10 were injured, the total death toll from the violence in the state rose to 110.

Police Chief K Shivakanta Singh stated that security forces arrived in the area and the incidents were brought under control, with the injured being taken to hospital.

Due to the violence in Manipur, more than 47,000 people have been displaced so far, hundreds of homes have been destroyed, according to official data from the state government.

THE SOLDIER RECEIVED THE ORDER TO ‘HIT’

While the Meitei community, which represents 53 percent of the state’s population, organizes demonstrations claiming that it is not included in the “registered tribe” category, objections from groups, including the Kukis, who make up about 30 percent of the population population, lead to violence.

Demonstrations have been the scene of violence since May 3, and on May 4 soldiers were ordered to “shoot.”

Communities in the “planned tribe” category in India have opportunities such as political representation, places in schools and civil service.

The Meitei, who are not allowed by law to settle in mountainous areas, say they face difficulties due to the growing population of migrants from Myanmar and Bangladesh in the state. (AA)
