The number of forcibly displaced persons exceeded 108 million
The UNHCR report entitled “Global Education on Forced Displacement 2022” has been published.
The report says the number of people forcibly displaced rose to 108.4 million, nearly 19 million more last year compared to the end of 2021.
It was claimed that 62.5 million of these numbers include internally displaced persons, 35.3 million refugees, 5.4 million asylum seekers and 5.2 million people in need of international protection.
Low- and middle-income countries are reportedly home to 76 percent of the world’s refugees and those in need of international protection.
While the least developed countries host 20 percent of those forcibly displaced, around 70 percent of refugees and those in need of international protection live in neighboring countries.
MOST HOSTED IN Türkiye
The report underlines that Turkey is the country hosting the largest refugee population in the world, with approximately 3.6 million refugees.
Turkey was followed by Iran with 3.4 million, Colombia with 2.5 million and Germany with 2.1 million.
Based on their national populations, the island of Aruba (1 in 6 of its population) and Lebanon (1 in 7 of its population) were recorded to host the largest number of refugees and other people in need of international protection.
The report states that children, who make up 30 percent of the world’s population, account for 40 percent of those forcibly displaced.
MOST APPLICATIONS ARE MADE IN THE US.
While a total of 2.6 million asylum applications were made worldwide in 2022, the US was claimed to be the country that received the most applications with 730,400 people. He specified that while Germany followed the US with 217,800, Costa Rica, Spain and Mexico were in the top 5 in this category.
The report underlines that all the refugees and other people in need of international protection came from Syria with 6.5 million, Ukraine with 5.7 million and Afghanistan with 5.7 million. Consequently, 52 per cent of people in need of protection came from these 3 countries.
It was also stated that the total number of refugees worldwide reached 34.6 million by the end of 2022, an increase of 35 percent (8.9 million people).
It was also emphasized that this increase was largely due to revised estimates of the number of Ukrainian refugees fleeing the war at home and Afghans in Iran and Pakistan.
6 MILLION PEOPLE RETURNED TO THE COUNTRY
More than 6 million IDPs, including 5.7 million IDPs and 339,300 refugees, returned to their countries in 2022, according to the report.
The report indicated that 114,300 refugees were transferred from the country where they applied for asylum to another country that received them, and this rate increased by half compared to the previous year.
It was also shared that UNHCR handed over 116,500 refugees to countries for resettlement.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, whose views are included in the report, said: “These figures show us that some people are too quick to get involved in conflict and too slow to find a solution. The result is destruction, displacement and suffering for each and every one of the millions who have been forcibly evicted from their homes.
In the report, it was noted that while the number of refugees and displaced persons finding solutions increased in 2022 compared to the previous year, the outlook for permanent solutions was not bright. (AA)
