The French taxman has tracked more than 120,000 swimming pools across the country that have not been declared to the taxman by analyzing aerial photos. French people who have such a pool have been told by the tax authorities they have thirty days to declare their pool and state the size, year of construction and other details.
The French taxman, hoping for additional revenue of around 50 million euros, has teamed up with a company to develop software that can analyze photos taken by the National Geographic Institute. A test in the fall of 2021 found 20,000 unreported pools. In Europe, France is one of the countries with the largest number of private swimming pools. A new swimming pool must be declared to the authorities within three months of construction if it is larger than ten square metres.
