US MPs’ Uyghur Turk Bill

A group of lawmakers has introduced a bill to the US House of Representatives to grant Uyghurs “second priority refugee” status.

A group of MPs, led by Democrat MP Jennifer Wexton, introduced the bill dubbed the “Uyghur Human Rights Protection Act,” which includes granting refugee status to Uyghurs living in the Uyghur Autonomous Region of Xinjiang, the second priority designated by the US Department of State.

Under the bill, which stated that “the Muslim and Turkic minority in China, especially the Uyghurs, are oppressed,” people who live in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region or who have had to leave their homes due to they faced pressure and their families were granted second priority refugee status.

Parliamentarians who supported the bill included María Elvira Salazar, Gregory Meeks, Don Beyer, and Gerry Connolly. (AA)
