Sweden grants NATO permission to maintain troops on its territory

In a joint article written by Swedish Prime Minister Kristersson and Defense Minister Pal Jonson for the Dagens Nyheter newspaper, it was claimed that Russia continues to pose a threat to them and that the Swedish government has decided that the army can carry out preparations with NATO. Member States to allow future joint operations.

“Russia remains a threat to us,” the article said. In the event of a crisis or war, we must be able to quickly bring other nations’ military resources into our region. As the Swedish government, we allowed NATO troops to be in our country temporarily, without being members of the alliance.” expressions were used.

In the article, it was noted:

“Moscow takes enormous military and political risks to achieve its geopolitical goals. Russia’s war against Ukraine is unlike anything we have seen in modern times in Europe. We are in the most serious security risk since World War II. Russia will continue to pose a threat to its neighbors for the foreseeable future. It is impossible to say where the limits of Putin’s territorial ambition lie. We made such a decision in light of the grave situation in our immediate environment.”

After the start of the Russia-Ukraine war, Finland and neighboring Sweden applied for NATO membership on May 18, 2022, ending their decades-long policy of military neutrality.

Finland became NATO’s 31st member in April, while Turkey and Hungary have yet to receive membership approval from Sweden. (AA)
