Support of firefighters from the European Union to Canada

The Canadian government sought help under the EU Civil Protection Mechanism for wildfires that started in the south of the country and could not be controlled.

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, made a statement today. Von der Leyen said: “We stand in solidarity with Canada in the face of the terrible forest fires. Canada has requested the support of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism and we are responding immediately.”

Stating that 280 firefighters from France, Portugal and Spain will be sent within the scope of the mechanism, Commission President von der Leyen emphasized that more firefighters will be sent.

20 THOUSAND REGISTERED PEOPLE

The EU Humanitarian Office said in a statement on the matter: “There have been numerous forest fires the size of the Netherlands since May, with unusual extent and intensity, burning approximately 4.1 million hectares. Smoke from these wildfires also billows into cities across the United States, releasing 10 times more carbon dioxide than average. More than 20,000 people have been evacuated across Canada.

CANCELED FLIGHTS IN THE US

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced that reduced visibility due to smoke from the wildfires in Canada affected air travel and delayed flights to New York’s LaGuardia Airport, and departures to the airport were also cancelled. Philadelphia International.

“Decreased visibility from wildfire smoke will continue to affect air travel today,” the FAA said in a statement. We may need to take steps to safely manage the flow of traffic to New York City, Washington DC, Philadelphia, and Charlotte. We have halted flights to LaGuardia Airport from the Northeast, Ohio, and the Mid-Atlantic. Departures to Philadelphia International Airport have been canceled due to poor visibility.

The FAA stated that flights to LaGuardia will be delayed by an average of 54 minutes.

In addition, an announcement was made on the official social media accounts of the LaGuardia and Philadelphia airports, urging passengers to contact the airlines for flight status updates.
