Smoke engulfs cities in the US: “It will last days”
The US National Weather Service has warned that poor and unsanitary weather conditions caused by smoke from wildfires in Canada reaching the US will continue for several days in the country.
National Weather Service meteorologist Bryan Ramsey said in a statement that the current adverse weather conditions could last for days or even weeks. While the smoke, which is effective in Canada and especially the eastern side of the US, negatively affects the lives of millions of people, this situation is expected to continue through the end of the week.
Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser has ordered city schools to cancel student outings, outdoor sports and field trips during recess. In the city of Philadelphia, the authorities created areas for people living on the street and affected by smoke to take refuge.
EMERGENCY IN NEW YORK
New York Governor Kathy Hochul described the situation in the region as an “emergency crisis.” While the air quality index should normally be 50, it hit 400 in some parts of New York yesterday.
The wildfires, which continued in some 400 points across Canada, displaced some 20,000 people. The United States sent 600 firefighters and equipment to Canada.
Forest fires are said to release significant pollutants into the atmosphere, and smoke from the fires contains fine particles called PM2.5, which enter the lungs and cause health problems such as asthma and bronchitis. (AA)
