Former FBI agent accused of espionage found dead in his cell
According to the CBC News story, Kristie Breshears, director of communications for the US Bureau of Prisons, said that Hanssen, who was sentenced to life in prison in the US for spying for Russia, was restrained in his cell and prison staff took steps to intervene immediately.
Breshears stated that prison staff informed emergency medical teams: “News of the prisoner’s death was announced by emergency medical personnel.” she shared the knowledge of him.
ACCUSED OF SELLING INFORMATION TO RUSSIA
Hanssen was accused of selling highly classified documents from 1979 to the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) and then to Russia.
Hanssen, who pleaded guilty, was sentenced to life in prison in 2001 for espionage by a federal court.
Hanssen is known to have used the pseudonym “Ramón García” while spying and selling thousands of confidential documents in exchange for more than $1.4 billion in cash, diamonds and foreign bank deposits.
Hanssen, who was captured spying on a park in Virginia in 2001, was identified after a Russian intelligence officer handed over a garbage bag containing Hanssen’s fingerprints and a file containing the audio recording. (AA)
