One of the deadliest train accidents in the last 10 years
The train accident in India, which killed nearly 300 people on Friday June 2, has been recorded as one of the world’s deadliest rail disasters in the past decade.
At least 288 people were killed and 850 injured when three trains collided in eastern India on Friday night.
Rescuers are trying to extricate the many passengers trapped under the carriages. Since the turn of the century, thirteen rail accidents, at least three of which were caused by terrorist attacks, have claimed more than 50 lives each.

2023 / GREECE
On February 28, 2023, a freight train and a passenger train collided head-on between Athens and Thessaloniki, killing 57 people, making it the worst rail accident Greece has ever seen.
2022 / DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO
On March 10, 2022, a freight train loaded with stowaways derailed in Lualaba province in the southeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, killing at least 75 people and injuring 125.
2021 / PAKISTAN
At least 63 people were killed when a train derailed and collided with another passenger train in southern Pakistan on June 7, 2021.
2021 / TAIWAN
At least 49 people were killed and 200 injured when a train carrying about 500 passengers collided with a truck that skidded down a slope in the eastern Taiwanese coastal city of Hualien on April 2, 2021. The accident was the island’s worst rail disaster in recent years.
2019/ PAKISTAN
At least 75 people died in a fire on a passenger train in central Pakistan on October 31, 2019. The victims were pilgrims. The fire was attributed to the accidental explosion of gas cylinders.
