Report: Russia’s military spending rises, may put pressure on government
According to the intelligence report on the Russia-Ukraine war published daily by the British Ministry of Defence, on May 25, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) reported that Russian military spending increased by 9.2 percent. percent in 2022 to reach 86.4 billion dollars.
“SIPRI assesses that this is equivalent to 4.1 percent of Russia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP),” the report says. Russia’s actual military spending is highly uncertain, especially from February 2022, due to increased use of secret budget items and lack of transparency. Russia recently resumed publishing key spending breakdowns, which it suspended in May 2022.
In the statement, it was noted that while military spending is expected to remain high, this situation may put pressure on the financial situation of the Russian government.
