The results are expected to reflect support for Social Democrat Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s left-wing coalition government and, in particular, the popularity of the prime minister himself, who has been in power since 2018. National parliamentary elections are scheduled for December.
Voting takes place in the parliaments of twelve of the seventeen autonomous regions and municipal elections are held throughout the country. The largest opposition party, the People’s Party (PP), led by Alberto Núñez Feijóo, is hoping, among other things, for a big electoral victory in the capital Madrid. In the Community of Valencia, in the eastern region, the PP is hoping for a majority together with the right-wing conservative Vox.
