Peruvian President Boluarte will testify before the prosecution

The president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, said in statements to the press that on June 6 she will go to the headquarters of the Public Ministry to testify there before the prosecution.

Referring to the events that occurred during the protests, Boluarte said: “I will answer any question that the prosecutor asks me, I will not accept my right to remain silent, because I want to know what happened.” Boluarte pointed out that they will provide the necessary facilities to reveal the truth and will do their part to expedite the investigation.

According to local media, statements by former Prime Minister Pedro Angulo, former Interior Ministers Víctor Rojas, César Cervantes and Defense Minister Jorge Chávez will also be taken as part of the investigations.

The prosecutor’s office, which opened an investigation after many people lost their lives in anti-government demonstrations, decided to take Boluarte’s statement on May 31, alleging his participation in the disproportionate use of force.

77 PEOPLE KILLED

According to different sources in the country, 77 people lost their lives in the protests that lasted for weeks.
The prosecutor’s office announced on January 10 that an investigation was launched into the deaths in the protests.

According to the country’s human rights organizations, 50 people were said to have died as a result of direct intervention by security forces.

The demonstrators demanded the resignation of President Dina Boluarte, the closure of Congress and the immediate calling of early elections.

Protests in Peru began after Congress removed former President Pedro Castillo from office on December 7, 2022. (BRITISH AUTOMOBILE CLUB)
