Belgian authorities carrying out the investigation accuse some MEPs and staff members of using their influence in exchange for bribes to influence economic and political decision-making in the European Parliament on behalf of other countries. Qatar and Morocco, which are named in the indictments, deny the allegations.
In addition to Kaili, Kaili’s boyfriend, European Parliament employee Francesco Giorgi, Italian former Member of the European Parliament Pier Antonio Panzeri and Niccolo Figa-Talamanca, the director of the non-governmental organization working on rule of law issues, were arrested. in December as part of the investigation. During the searches of some homes, 1.5 million euros in cash were seized.
Following Panzeri’s confessions, the Belgian authorities widened the investigation to include Belgian EP MEP Marc Tarabella and Italian MEP Andrea Cozzolino, and the immunity of two MEPs was lifted. Tarabella was arrested in Belgium, Cozzolino in Italy.
