Reuters analysis: Kurds worried about Erdogan’s election

Recalling that the HDP supported Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu in the first round, the agency said that the Kurds were concerned that the pressure would increase with Erdoğan’s victory and that many Kurdish citizens saw the elections as a matter of “life and death”. Speaking to Reuters in Diyarbakir, a 26-year-old cafe operator said: “Erdogan solidified his stance against the Kurds during his election campaign. “I can’t imagine what they can do if he declares victory,” he said.

In a statement to Reuters, one of the HDP executives, Tayip Temel, stated that Erdogan was conducting black propaganda by pretending there was a connection between Kılıçdaroğlu and the terrorists. Stating that Kılıçdaroğlu’s nationalist rhetoric may cause him to lose some Kurdish votes, Temel said: “Erdogan’s victory strengthens one-man rule, paves the way for terrible practices and causes dark laughter in all segments of society.” .

The president of the Diyarbakir Bar Association, Nahit Eren, also argued that Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu’s statements about the Kurds could be a signal for further investigations by the Kurdish authorities.
