Florida Governor Nominated for US Presidential Election
In the United States, the Republican governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, has officially announced his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election.
“I’m Ron DeSantis, I’m a presidential candidate to lead our incredible American comeback,” DeSantis said in a video message announcing his presidency. Pointing to border issues and rising crime rates in his message, DeSantis said: “Our border is a mess, crime is invading our cities, the federal government is making things difficult for families and the president (Joe Biden) is hesitating But fall is a choice, success can be achieved, and freedom is worth fighting for,” he said.
DeSantis, in his message emphasizing the integrity of order, common sense and institutions, argued that he demonstrated that these can be implemented in the state of Florida, where he is governor.
TECHNICAL FAILURE VICTORY
DeSantis was expected to announce his candidacy live, simultaneously with the video message, on Twitter’s voice chat room (Twitter Spaces), where he was joined by Twitter owner Elon Musk.
However, the transmission, which was interrupted on multiple occasions due to technical problems, was delayed for nearly half an hour. Musk argued that the interruptions were caused by the participation of a large number of people in the conversation.
DeSantis answered questions on many topics that came up, such as the educational curriculum in Florida, irregular immigrants and the decision to end Disney’s autonomy. DeSantis also thanked Musk for providing the opportunity for “free speech” on Twitter.
WHO IS DESANTIS?
DeSantis, 44, a politician from Florida, studied history at Yale University and law at Harvard. DeSantis worked as a legal adviser in the US Navy and later entered politics at a young age.
DeSantis, who was a member of the House of Representatives from 2013 to 2018, is known for his closeness with Donald Trump. During his tenure as Florida’s governor since 2019, DeSantis has stood out with his moves that appeal to conservative voters in national politics.
DeSantis, who signed the bills that limit the need for vaccination, abortion and the arrival of irregular immigrants, came to the fore with the termination of the autonomy of the famous Walt Disney World entertainment center.
DeSantis recently passed a bill that prevents Chinese individuals and organizations from buying land near farmland and military installations within the state.
In foreign policy, DeSantis, who has advocated for tougher policies against China and Iran, described the Russia-Ukraine war as a “territorial dispute” and drew a reaction even from lawmakers from his own party.
TRUMP’S CLOSEST COMPETITOR
In the Morning Consult poll of voters in the May 19-21 GOP primary, 58 percent of respondents said Trump, while his closest rival DeSantis fell 38 points behind. and remained at 20 percent.
Trump had warned DeSantis, of whom he has recently been accused, not to appear, arguing that it would split the party’s votes.
In addition to Trump and DeSantis, names like former United States permanent representative to the UN Nikki Haley, young billionaire Vivek Ramaswamy, businessman Perry Johnson, conservative black radio host Larry Elder, Senator Tim Scott and politician Asa Hutchinson They are among the names who have already announced their candidacy for the Republican Party.
