The Italian media rose up: government pressure caused a resignation crisis
Reaction to the right-wing government of Giorgia Meloni is growing rapidly on Rai, Italy’s state television.
Noting that the Meloni government has rapidly increased pressure on the media and that the channel is trying to destroy the anti-fascist broadcast mentality, the sources claimed that many people at Rai have resigned.
According to the news in the British newspaper The Guardian, the general director of the channel, Carlo Fuortes, resigned in recent weeks, alleging that he was pressured by the government. Left-leaning talk show host Fabio Fazio and broadcaster Luciana Littizzetto have parted ways with the channel after their contracts were not renewed.
More resignations are expected in the coming weeks.
It should be noted that those who resigned were replaced by names close to the government. The channel’s new director general is Giampaolo Rossi, who is close to Meloni’s fascist Brothers of Italy party.
Noting that the government is very repressive, a Rai source commented that the government is trying to change the channel’s rhetoric and change the anti-fascist stance in the country.
While the incident sparked strong reactions in the Italian press, Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini celebrated the resignation of journalists from Rai, which has been targeted by the right for some time, with a “Belli ciao” tweet.
