A week-long ceasefire in Sudan

The ceasefire agreement signed in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, mediated by Saudi Arabia and the United States, with the participation of representatives of the two parties, entered into force at 9:45 p.m. local time. The ceasefire, which was provided 7 times before, was repeatedly violated by both sides.
As the humanitarian situation in the capital Khartoum worsens, tens of thousands of people continue to leave the capital for what they consider to be safer areas, inside and outside the country.
The Sudanese Doctors Union announced that 863 civilians have been killed and 3,531 injured in clashes between the army and the HDK in the capital Khartoum and other cities since 15 April.

The parties announced that they had declared a ceasefire on May 20, with the mediation of the international community, effective today.
Saudi Arabia and the United States affirmed that they will continue the talks held in the city of Jeddah to resolve the crisis between the army and the HDK, which is in conflict in Sudan.
The short-term ceasefire agreement, which aims to “deliver emergency humanitarian aid and provide basic services” to be implemented throughout Sudan, includes compliance with the parties’ commitments on humanitarian obligations in the Jeddah Declaration. .

The war of words began when the army demanded the full integration of the HDK into the army within 2 years, which it once supported but considered a threat because it behaved like an independent and parallel army, while the HDK announced that it could accept it. in a period of about 10 years after a civilian rule and the escalation of tension turned into an armed conflict between the parties on the morning of April 15, in the capital Khartoum and in several cities.
The HDK was formed as a militia structure to fight rebels, protect borders and maintain order in Darfur during the term of President Omar al-Bashir, who was ousted in a 2019 coup. affiliated with the Security and Intelligence Organization in 2013 and later became more independent, it has tens of thousands of members.

Volker Perthes, Head of the United Nations (UN) Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS) and UN Representative in Sudan, in his speech at the UN Security Council meeting on Sudan, said that the conflicts in Sudan are becoming more and more “ethnic”. and that this has led the country into a prolonged conflict, he warned that there was a risk of a milestone.
