‘Strategy for Africa must offer perspectives’ Related articles

This week the cabinet will present a strategy for Africa, a political vision for the continent which is only 40 kilometers from Europe. The time had come, says CDA deputy Mustafa Amhaouch. ‘We have to step up a march. I assume it will reach the Assembly this week and that there will finally be a vision and a strategy for Africa.’

Africa has 1.3 billion inhabitants spread across 54 countries and is the second largest continent on earth. According to Amhaouch, the Netherlands actually has no vision of a continent only 40 kilometers from Europe. He underlines how much China has an advantage there and maintains good relations with Africa. “They also include Africa in their value chain and I think it is the most important thing for Europe to include Africa in the value chain.”

‘Development aid is not attractive for countries that want to develop economically’

However, according to Amhaouch, many African countries are also frustrated with that relationship with China and feel that Europe is forcing them in that direction. While they want “only equal opportunities and decent jobs”. Africa does not want to rely solely on development aid. “That money is important for a number of countries, but not for countries that want to develop further economically.”

Prospect

What should be included in that strategy for Africa? Perspective for the next generation, says Amhaouch. ‘The Netherlands has a large amount of knowledge and expertise in the fields of water, agri-food and digitalisation. There are also many young people in Africa who have studied but have no prospects and therefore really want to cross the Mediterranean.’ Amhaouch also highlights the climate transition that is taking place in Africa and to which the Netherlands can contribute.

“A strategy for Africa must offer future generations a perspective”

Mustafa Amhaouch, Member of Parliament of the CDA

It expects the government to outline a vision, both in the short and medium term. He hopes it’s not just a paper tiger. “The strategy for Africa must indicate what we will do there and must also offer solutions in terms of migration and climate.”
