THE ELECTION MAY BE A SECOND TIME
Under the electoral system implemented for the first time this year in Greece, if the poll results do not allow any party to come to power alone, negotiations for a coalition will take place. If a consensus for the coalition cannot be reached, ballot boxes are set up for voters a second time.
When the ballot box goes to the polls a second time, the winning party gets an additional 20 seats in the 300-seat parliament, as long as it receives at least 25 percent of the vote. Every time the voting rate exceeds 25 percent by 0.5 percent, the number of additional seats increases by one.
According to unofficial results, if New Democracy, which has 146 seats in parliament, wins the same percentage of votes at the polls for the second time, the number of seats is expected to exceed 160 and it is expected to come to power alone. (AA)
