Greece at the polls: a novelty is happening
Today, Greece goes to the polls… Voters who go to the polls will choose between 27 political parties, 8 alliances and 1 independent candidate.
Under the electoral system in Greece, voters not only choose parties and alliances, but also choose between the parties’ parliamentary candidates.
With the closing of the polls, the exit polls will also be published.
The Greek Interior Ministry is expected to start announcing the first unofficial results from 8:30 p.m.
There are approximately 9 million 800 thousand registered voters in the country.
After lowering the voting age from 18 to 17 with the 2016 decision, 17-year-old voters can vote for the first time in this year’s general election.
While the number of 17-year-old voters who can vote for the first time is registered at 112,097, the number of voters between 17 and 21 years of age exceeds 438,000.
If a government cannot be formed with the results of the polls today, voters will have to go to the polls a second time.
However, in the second ballot, the party with the most votes will have an additional 20 seats in parliament. (AA)
