New York City is crashing down
In research published in the group’s journal Advancing Earth and Space Science (AGU), the effect of skyscrapers, especially in the Manhattan region, on the geological structure of the city was examined.
The study found that parts of New York City, where more than 8 million people live, see 1 to 2 millimeters of sea level collapse each year due to the mass of skyscrapers.
Emphasizing that the collapse in question was small-scale, but made the city vulnerable to natural disasters, the inquiry said: “As coastal cities grow globally, the increasing intensity of construction and the Rising sea levels mean greater risks of flooding. a warning has been issued.
The study pointed out that the areas with the highest risk of flooding are the lower part of the island of Manhattan and some areas of Brooklyn and Queens.
In the research, which calculated the mass of all the buildings in New York City and modeled the collapse caused by the pressure they applied to the Earth, detailed graphical images of the collapse observed in New York from of satellite data. (AA)
