According to Hummels, Lukashenko fell ill on Victory Day in Russia and has not appeared in public since. “Nobody knows what’s going on, and that may also mean there’s still big news to come,” Hummels told BNR’s Perestrojkast. “If there are big news to report.”
Lukashenko clearly failed to attend a number of major events, says Hummels. Even in a ceremony where he would pay homage to the flag. “And his normal presidential activities have also been suspended,” he says. “So it’s not like he’s on vacation; he really missed events that he normally would never miss.’
Speculations
And so the rumors run full steam ahead. There is speculation that Lukashenko has been ill for some time. Hummels understands that sentiment. “He hasn’t been in good health for a long time,” he continues. Lukashenko has also often disappeared from the radar, but according to Hummels it is all the more relevant that he fell ill in Moscow. “For example, he wasn’t having lunch with other leaders of the former Soviet republics,” he says. “Maybe there’s a bigger underlying disease, but it hasn’t been disclosed.”
