Hundreds of thousands flee conflict in Sudan

The number of people displaced by the conflict between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (HDK) in Sudan, which has been going on for a month, is close to 950,000.

According to data from the United Nations (UN), 736,200 people have been displaced within the country since April 15, while approximately 200,000 people have sought refuge in neighboring countries. While 450,000 of those who fled their homes were children, tens of thousands of people who took refuge in Sudan after instability in their neighbors returned to their country.

Most of the refugees and asylum seekers sought refuge in Al Jazeera and Al Kadarif states in search of a place of safety. More than 500,000 of the displaced were those who fled the capital, Khartoum.

The “Jeddah Declaration” was signed on May 11, as a result of negotiations between the parties in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in order to stop the conflicts that have been going on for almost a month between the army and the HDK in Sudan. . In the statement, which was signed through negotiations carried out under the mediation of the US and Saudi Arabia, it was emphasized that the Sudanese military and the HDK will stay away from any attack that harms civilians, stressing that the interests of the Sudanese people were the priority for both sides.
