The Kyoto District Court has determined due process for Aoba, a suspect in the arson attack of the three-story KyoAni studio in the city’s Fushimi district four years ago.

According to the indictment, Aoba, who will appear in court in September on many charges including murder and arson, is expected to be sentenced by the end of January 2024.

In the incident that occurred in July 2019, 36 KyoAni employees lost their lives and 33 were injured. Aoba, who was also injured in the attack, received treatment before being arrested in May 2020.

It was recorded that Aoba went to Kyoto from her home in Saitama 3 days before the attack and deliberately started a fire in the studio by spilling gasoline on the day of the incident and was seen at the scene during the attack.

It is considered one of the largest murder cases in the country.

In his interrogation it was claimed that Aoba, who admitted to the attack, had previously submitted his work to the novel contest organized by the KyoAni studio and shouted, “I started a fire because my novels were stolen” on the day of the attack. incident.

The animation studio announced that following the complaints, the suspect’s works did not pass the preliminary screening and were not accepted. After lengthy psychiatric evaluations, it was concluded that the Japanese suspect had criminal capacity.

According to Japan’s National Police Agency, the KyoAni attack is considered one of the country’s largest murder cases in terms of loss of life.
