Zelenskiy continues his foreign visits in Italy

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy met Italian President Sergio Mattarella in Rome, where he arrived to establish official contacts.

Zelenskiy, who arrived in the Italian capital for the first time after Russia’s war against Ukraine on February 24, 2022, met Italian President Mattarella for the first time. After Mattarella welcomed Zelenskiy with an official ceremony at the presidential palace, Quirinale, the meeting began.

President Mattarella told Zelenskiy at the beginning of the meeting: “It is an honor to receive you here. With the support of Italy, he is totally with you.” According to the information obtained from Italian Presidency sources, Mattarella reiterated his full support for Zelenskiy, and Zelenskiy thanked Italy for the support given to Ukraine.

The two leaders discussed the effectiveness of economic sanctions against Russia, the situation of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, the fight against fake news throughout Europe, the bombing of civilian structures and the kidnapping of Ukrainian children, the reconstruction of Ukraine, Ukraine’s entry into the European Union (EU) reportedly received.

Zelenskiy then went to the Prime Minister’s palace, Chigi, where he met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Prime Minister Meloni welcomed Zelensky with an official ceremony in the courtyard of the prime minister’s office. During the welcome, Meloni reaffirmed Italy’s full 360-degree support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence.

In the afternoon, Zelenskiy will travel to Vatican City State, adjacent to Rome, to meet with Pope Francis, the spiritual leader of Catholics and Head of Vatican State.

ROME AIRSPACE CLOSED

Extensive security measures were taken in the capital city of Rome for the President of Ukraine. While 1,000 police officers were assigned to protect Zelenskiy, Rome’s airspace was also closed to flights.

Meanwhile, dozens of Ukrainians in Rome gathered in Barberini Square, following the routes Zelenskiy passed through, and showed their support for the heads of state.

Zelenskiy is expected to move to Berlin, the German capital, after completing his contacts in Italy. (AA)
