Record number of unaccompanied refugee children registered in Belgium in 2022
According to the news in the French-language newspaper La Derniere Heure, Belgian Immigration and Asylum Minister Nicole de Moor claimed in her speech in Parliament that 6,434 unaccompanied asylum-seeking children were registered in 2022 compared to the previous year. De Moor noted that this is the highest figure ever.
Noting that 2,200 of these children are between the ages of 11 and 15, Moor stated that this situation does not require the opening of new shelters.
There has been a long-standing crisis in Belgium over the lack of refuge for asylum seekers.
As the refugee reception centers are full, these people, regardless of their age or gender, are forced to sleep on the street. (AA)
