These plans are a response to hundreds of billions of dollars the US government wants to green its industry, which has led to concerns in Europe about competition with the US. The Americans are threatening to drive many producers out of the European Union with their generous tax breaks and subsidies.
Manufacturing industry
Macron announced his plans to strengthen French industry in a meeting at the Elysée with lawmakers and businessmen. According to him, it is very important for France and the EU to have their own strong manufacturing industry at an ‘economic, geopolitical level and for the unity of the country’.
Details of some of the announced measures will be announced next week in a “green industry” bill. Other intentions are elaborated by the French government in its budget proposal for 2024.
Electric machine
Macron hopes to make European-made electric cars more attractive by granting purchase subsidies only for units produced without many CO2 emissions. Producers in France could benefit indirectly because a relatively large amount of energy comes from nuclear power plants.
Macron also wants to invest more in training to boost its sector. Furthermore, the time required to open a factory in France must be halved.
