Lowest birth rate in 30 years in France

According to the monthly demographic report of the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Research (INSEE), an average of 1,816 babies were born per day in March in France.

The number of births has fallen to the lowest level in the country since 1994, when data was recorded monthly for the last 30 years.

Also, compared to March 2022, there was a 7 percent decrease in the number of newborns in the same period this year. In the Ile-de-France and Occitanie regions, where the capital city of Paris is located, baby births have fallen even more than in France’s overseas territories.

INSEE attributes this decrease in the number of newborns both to the decrease in the number of women of childbearing age and to the slowdown in the fertility rate in recent years. With 723,000 babies born in the country last year, the number of newborns was the lowest annual figure since 1946.

It was also claimed that the deportation of more than 161,000 people, most of whom had an immigration background, was also effective in slowing the rate of population growth. (AA)
