Impressive immigration report: Millions have fled their homes
The Internal Migration Monitoring Center (IDMC), based in Geneva, Switzerland, announced that 71.1 million people were internally displaced in 2022. In the published report, it was stated that the migrations occurred as a result of war, violence and natural disasters.
The number in question was reported to have increased by 20 percent compared to the previous year. In the 2021 report, the number of displaced people was shared at 60.9 million. It was claimed that 16.9 million people had to migrate within the country due to the Russia-Ukraine war that started on February 24, 2022, which is the highest figure detected to date.
The report includes data from 65 countries.
CAUSES OF INTERNAL MIGRATION
In addition to the rapid increase in conflicts in countries like Ukraine and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), major natural disasters like the floods in Pakistan were also listed as the main causes of internal migration in 2022. “These people have joined tens of millions of people who have already been displaced by protracted conflicts, repeated disasters and the lack of durable solutions,” the report says.
The report also offered solutions to avoid this increase and prevent further migration. The report continued:
“It is essential to support internally displaced persons to return, integrate locally or resettle elsewhere in their country. Better data and evidence on solutions, prevention and effective response to displacement are key. Conflict resolution, peacebuilding, disaster risk reduction, climate resilience, food security and poverty reduction must be ensured.” (DHA)
