Ukraine: the anniversary of the victory over the Nazis is now Europe Day

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, announced that he signed the decree on the celebration of May 9 as “Europe Day” in his country.

Zelenskiy, in his statement on his social media account, recalled that May 9 is traditionally celebrated as “Europe Day” on the European continent. Stating that unity on the European continent has brought Ukraine closer to celebrating the first day of peace, Zelenskiy said: “It would be right to celebrate Europe Day together with all of free Europe. Today I signed the corresponding decree. Every year, on May 9, we will celebrate our historic unity, the unity of all Europeans who destroyed Nazism and defeated racism.

Zelenskiy reported that he presented the bill to parliament, which contemplates that May be designated as the commemoration of the fallen in World War II and the “Victory Day” against Nazism.

Robert Schuman, then French Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced on May 9, 1950 a bill with the aim of establishing permanent peaceful relations in Europe and creating an organized Europe. Known as the “Schuman Declaration”, this bill is considered the foundation of the current European Union.

At the Union summit in Milan in 1985, it was decided to celebrate May 9 as “Europe Day”. (AA)
