Clashes continue in Sudan despite ceasefire talks
While the capital Khartoum witnessed fierce clashes, the two sides continue negotiations in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
According to eyewitnesses, heavy artillery shots are heard and smoke rises around the Presidential Palace and the General Command of the Army in the center of the capital.
In addition, military fighter jets hit some points under HDK control in the Umdurman region.
In the Bahri region, fires broke out in some factories due to the clashes.
The army announced on May 3 that it had accepted the initiative of the Intergovernmental Authority on East African Development (IGAD), which recommended extending the ceasefire by one week.
On May 5, the HDK announced that the ceasefire was being extended for another 72 hours, mediated by the US and Saudi Arabia, to open humanitarian aid corridors, facilitate the movement of citizens and residents, address their needs, and reach safe areas.
US AND SAUDI ARABIAN SETTLEMENT EFFORTS
The Sudanese army stated that on May 5, with the mediation of Saudi Arabia and the United States, representatives of the two parties went to Jeddah to discuss the details of the ceasefire, which is being renewed to guarantee security.
In a phone call between the minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, and his American counterpart, Antony Blinken, the Saudi Foreign Ministry stated that they were ready to receive representatives of the army and HDK in Jeddah to discuss the issue of the halt. the fire of Saudi Arabia as part of the efforts of the two countries.
The ministry stated that the talks between the two sides are aimed at laying the foundation for a dialogue that will ensure the security and stability of Sudan and its people and reduce the level of tension.
CRISIS IN SUDAN
The disagreement in recent months over “military security reform”, which provided for the full involvement of the HDK in Sudan, established in 2013 to support government forces against armed rebels in the Darfur region, turned into a conflict burning since the morning of April 15.
Sudan’s Foreign Ministry reported that the Chairman of the Sovereignty Council and Commander of the Army, General Abdulfettah al-Burhan, has decided to dissolve the HDK, which has clashed with the army, and declare it an “anti-state rebel force.” .
The World Health Organization (WHO) announced that the number of people who have lost their lives in the ongoing conflict has risen to 551, and 4,926 people have been injured. (AA)
