Forest fire in Canada: thousands evacuated

In the Canadian province of Alberta, 13,000 people were evacuated from their homes by forest fires in 78 different locations.

Authorities reported that 19 of the 78 active fires, fueled by extreme heat and wind conditions, were out of control. Christie Tucker, director of the Alberta firefighting team, told a news conference that extreme temperatures and strong winds are expected, especially in the northern half of the province.

Stating that weather conditions can cause new fires, Tucker warned people to be careful.

About 80 firefighters from the provinces of Ontario and Quebec are expected to arrive in the area to help fight the blaze. The federal government has stated that it stands ready to offer support if assistance is needed. (AA)
