UN appeal to Sudan: Do not close the doors to refugees

The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has called on governments to accept people who have fled Sudan and not send them back to Sudan, where the conflict is raging.

“We call on governments not to send anyone back to Sudan due to the ongoing conflict in Sudan,” said Elizabeth Tan, UNHCR International Protection Manager, at a press conference in Geneva. “This warning also applies to Sudanese citizens, foreign citizens, refugees who have taken refuge in Sudan, stateless people, and people without passports or identity documents,” she said.

Tan added that although the crowds waiting in the Sudan-Egypt border area are building, there are no signs that people fleeing Sudan will not be allowed to enter neighboring countries.

Due to the clashes that began in April between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary group called Rapid Support Forces (RSF), where the army shares the management of the country, 100,000 people had to flee to neighboring countries, according to the latest figures. published by the UN. The shipment of aid materials has also been interrupted in conflicts in the country, where almost a third of the population needs humanitarian aid. (Reuters)
