7-day ceasefire in Sudan

The South Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the commander of the Sudanese army, General Abdul Fattah al-Burhan, and the commander of the HDK, Mohammed Hamdan Dagalu, agreed in “principle” on a seven-day ceasefire that will begin on 4 of May.

In the statement made by the ministry, it was indicated that the parties to the conflict in Sudan “agreed to a ceasefire” at the request of the president of South Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit. In the statement, it was indicated that the new ceasefire will begin on the night of Thursday, May 4, and will end on May 11.

South Sudanese President Mayardit is reported to have called on the warring parties in Sudan to start peace talks as soon as possible. Mayardit, in his phone calls with Burhan and Dagalu yesterday, said they need to determine where they want peace talks to take place to ensure a long-term ceasefire.

The statement noted that South Sudan’s attempt to resolve the crisis in Sudan came after extensive contacts with various international partners, including officials from Egypt, Uganda, Kenya, Canada and the United Kingdom.

It was reported that in the meetings held between South Sudan and international partners, the issue of delivering humanitarian aid to the Sudanese people, as well as the evacuation of foreign citizens, was also mentioned.

Meanwhile, Sudan’s Ministry of Health announced that the number of people who lost their lives in the clashes between the army and the HDK that began on April 15 rose to 550 and the number of wounded to 4,926. (AA)
