Far-right party banned in Greece

According to the Greek state agency AMNA, the Greek Supreme Court (Arios Pagos) has decided that the Greek Nationalist Party, founded by former deputy Kasidiaris, cannot participate in the general elections to be held on May 21.

Kasidiaris’s lawyer, Vaso Pantazi, stated that after the Supreme Court decision, Kasidiaris would not support any political party.

On the other hand, the Supreme Court gave permission to Anastasios Kanellopulos, who held the leadership of the Greek Nationalist Party for a short time in April, and then in the same month decided to run for election with the EAN Party, which he founded in 2022 and which it has been inactive for a while.

The far-right Golden Dawn Party, for which Kasidiaris was a member of parliament for one term, was recognized as a “criminal organization” by the Greek court in October 2020; Kasidiaris was also convicted of founding a criminal organization and being a member of a criminal organization.

The Supreme Court accepted 36 of 50 applications to participate in the general elections on May 21. Consequently, 27 political parties, 8 alliances and 1 independent candidate may participate in the elections. (AA)
