Hungry student ate ‘work of art’

According to news from The Korea Herald newspaper, Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan’s 38-piece solo exhibition called “WE” met art lovers at the Leeum Art Museum in Seoul.

An artwork called “Comedia”, which consists of a banana attached to the wall, is also part of the exhibition.

One of the museum visitors, an art student at Seoul National University, took the banana on the wall, peeled it, ate it, and stuck the peel to the wall.

“I STARTED AND ATE”

The student told museum officials, who asked him why he ate the banana: “I didn’t have breakfast, I was hungry.” he gave the answer.

Speaking to local press after the incident, the student said he believes “harmful modern art can be interpreted as a work of art.”

Meanwhile, it has been learned that the museum will not ask the student to cover the damage. It is known that the banana used at work is renewed every 2 or 3 days.

The solo exhibition “WE” by the artist Cattelan can be visited until July 16.

Known for his works of satirical sculpture and installations, the work of the artist Cattelan, called “Comedy”, which consists of a banana stuck to the wall with adhesive tape, was sold for $ 120,000 at the art fair he organized in the United States. in December 2019. Two versions of the three works produced by the artist found buyers for $120,000, and a price of $150,000 was set for the third copy.

In the certificate of authenticity delivered to the buyers with the work, it was said that the owners of the work could change the banana if they deemed it necessary, in case of rot.

Artist David Datuna ate one of the bananas right after he sold it.

The artist’s 18-karat gold toilet bowl-shaped sculpture was stolen from Blenheim Palace, where it was on display in England, in September 2019. The work, dubbed “America,” was valued at approximately $6 million. (AA)
