India: China violates bilateral agreements Related articles

According to the Indian defense minister, China is violating the bilateral agreements regarding the border area in the eastern region of Ladakh. This has consequences for the relations between the two countries. Three years ago, China and India fought a border dispute in which twenty Indian and four Chinese soldiers were killed. Since then, both countries have deployed tens of thousands of troops in the area.

Al Jazeera reports that Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh met his Chinese counterpart Li Shangfu. According to India, both had “candid discussions on developments in the border areas between India and China and on bilateral relations”. Singh told Li that “the development of relations between India and China is based on peace and tranquility on the borders” and that all border issues should be resolved in accordance with existing agreements and commitments.

India’s Defense Ministry said the deployment of large numbers of Chinese military personnel, their aggressive behavior and attempts to unilaterally change the status quo at the border violate agreements between the countries. These violations have eroded the entire basis of bilateral relations, Singh said. China has not responded to Singh’s comments.
