New Zealand independence sign

New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins said he personally supports a “republic” for his country, but as a leader that is not the change he wants to make.

Hipkins, who will attend the coronation of England’s King Charles III, said: “In time, ideally, New Zealand will be a fully independent country and stand on its own as it generally does now. But I don’t think replacing the governor-general with a presidency is a priority right now,” he said.

Hipkins said that he personally supports his country becoming a republic, but as a leader, this is not a change he wants to force.

New Zealand is one of the member states of the Commonwealth. King Charles III of England is represented in New Zealand by a Governor General.
