“A Nightmare for the Whole World”

The army also launched airstrikes on Omdurman, Khartoum’s twin city across the Nile River. In principle, a ceasefire was in effect until Sunday evening. The warring parties had agreed this earlier in the week at the urging of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Abdalla Hamdok, prime minister of Sudan from 2019 to 2021, meanwhile warns of an escalation of the conflict. The current battle between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and RSF leader Hamdan Daglo could escalate into full-blown civil war, he said. He calls that scenario “a nightmare for the whole world” and says the consequences of a Sudanese civil war could be greater than those of conflicts in Syria, Yemen or Libya.

Evacuation

The last Royal Netherlands Air Force evacuation flight from Sudan landed in Jordan yesterday evening, the defense ministry said. The number of people aboard this flight has not been disclosed. It is also unknown if there were any Dutch people on the plane. It was the last Sudan evacuation flight from the Netherlands.

Most of the Dutch nationals known to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to be in Sudan have now been evacuated from the African country. At least 160 Dutch people were taken from Sudan via air force flights or flights from other countries. About 130 displaced people of eighteen other nationalities flew in the Dutch plane.
