Legislation to end fast fashion in the EU

Legislation to end fast fashion in the EU

The EP Committee on the Environment unanimously approved the report that will lay the legal foundations for fast fashion products.

In the report, which includes recommendations for legislative regulation, it was stated that textile products sold within the EU must be sustainable, durable and easy to reuse, modify and recycle.

In the production of such products, it was requested that thread obtained from recycling be used and that it does not contain dangerous chemicals. It was stated that textile products must be produced respecting human, social and labor rights, and must not harm the environment and animal health.

In this context, it was demanded that excessive production and consumption of clothing and shoes be prevented, and that the EU Commission and EU member states should take measures to crack down on “fast fashion”.

It was emphasized that a new and clear definition should be introduced for “low-priced, low-quality products produced in large quantities” and that it is important to better inform consumers so that they can make more responsible and sustainable choices.

The report, which was unanimously accepted by Parliament’s Environment Committee, is expected to be adopted by the EP General Assembly before the summer. After processes in parliament, legal texts are prepared with the consensus of the EU Commission and member states. (AA)
