As normalization steps are being taken between Syria and Turkey, where violence and chaos have been raging for more than 10 years, came a notable claim from Syrian President Bashar Assad’s news agency, SANA.
Syria’s official news agency, SANA, shared details of the Turkey-Syria-Russia-Iran quadrangle summit that took place yesterday in Moscow… Sharing details of the meetings that took place yesterday and closely followed by the international community, SANA claimed that the withdrawal of Turkish soldiers from Syria were discussed at the summit.
While no detailed information on the issues discussed was shared after the summit attended by defense ministers and intelligence undersecretaries, the news agency reported: “The defense ministers of Syria, Russia, Iran and Turkey discussed the withdrawal of Turkish forces from Syrian territory and the implementation of the agreement on the M4 international highway in Moscow today”.
“The two sides discussed many files and the meeting went well,” the SANA report says.
The Damascus administration had previously announced that no normalization measures would be taken and the table would not be discussed without the withdrawal of Turkish soldiers in Syria.
After yesterday’s meeting, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu discussed steps that can be taken to strengthen security in Syria and normalize Turkey-Syria relations.

National Defense Minister Hulusi Akar, referring to the ‘meeting of four’ held in Moscow between the defense ministers of Turkey, Russia, Syria and Iran and intelligence chiefs, said: “We share that our goal is to ensure that our Syrian brothers and sisters that we host in our country return to their homes and lands voluntarily, safely and with dignity,” he said.
Akar also said, “We listened to the opinions and evaluations of our interlocutors and had the opportunity to convey our own opinions and evaluations in detail. As we always say, we respect Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, the only reason we are in Syria is to fight against terrorists, especially PKK/YPG/PYD and ISIS terrorist organizations, and we are constantly working to neutralize terrorists . he stressed that we will continue to do so, that this is important not only for us but also for the integrity of Syria.
STANDARDIZATION PROCESS START IN DECEMBER
The normalization process between Ankara and Damascus started on December 28, 2022.
At the time, as the defense ministers of Turkey, Russia and Syria were meeting in Moscow, Syrian President Bashar Assad announced that he had some conditions to sit at the table.
Relations between the two countries have broken since 2012.
