Preparations for the 72-hour Eid ceasefire in Sudan

Preparations for the 72-hour Eid ceasefire in Sudan

The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (HDK), which has been in conflict with the army in Sudan since April 15, announced that they will implement a 72-hour ceasefire from the first day of the holiday.

In the statement issued on the HDK’s Twitter account, “The ceasefire coincides with Eid al-Fitr. In order to open humanitarian corridors for the evacuation of citizens and provide an opportunity to celebrate Eid with their families, a full 72-hour ceasefire will be observed starting at 06:00 local time on the first day of Eid.

Sounds of clashes were heard overnight in many neighborhoods of the capital, especially in Erkevit, Mamura and Mujahideen. Some houses and businesses were severely damaged in the clashes. A fire broke out in some buildings.

Despite the ceasefire decision, gunshots continued to be heard in Khartoum after the Eid prayer.

Armed clashes broke out between the army and the paramilitary NGO on the morning of April 15 in the Sudanese capital Khartoum and other cities. The disagreement between the army and the HDK over the military security reform, which provides for the “full participation of the HDK in the army”, had become a hot-button conflict in recent months. According to the World Health Organization, at least 300 people died in the conflict. (AA)
