$15 million worth of gold stolen from Canadian airport

It was announced that 15 million US dollars (approximately 300 million TL) worth of gold was stolen from Toronto Pearson International Airport in Canada. The airport was used to ship gold mined in the province of Ontario.

Canadian authorities announced the incident occurred on Monday, the BBC reported. After the plane carrying the gold landed at the airport that night, its contents were transported to a secure loading facility.

This could go down as one of the biggest robberies in Canadian history. The last time a theft of this magnitude occurred in 2011 and 2012, 3,000 tons of maple syrup worth $18.7 million was stolen from a warehouse in Quebec.

Inspector Stephen Duivesteyn said his team was looking at all possibilities and said it was an unusual theft. Stating that the stolen container was half a square meter in size, Duivesteyn did not share the weight of the cargo.

According to the Toronto Sun newspaper, the police believe that criminal organizations may be behind the robbery. Duivesteyn, who was asked about this possibility, said it was too early to comment on this issue.
