EU immigration and asylum rules are changing
The European Parliament (EP) has agreed a package that will speed up the return of irregular migrants in the European Union (EU) and introduce new immigration and asylum rules, such as the mandatory distribution of asylum seekers among member states in emergency situations.
At the EP General Assembly, a vote was held on the EU Commission’s stalled immigration and asylum package. According to a written statement made by the EP after the vote, the new rules approved include measures to speed up the return of irregular migrants and prevent them from traveling to other countries within the EU.
The package, which obliges immigrants to be resettled in member states when the EU deems it necessary, links other situations to the voluntary principle, as a requirement of the “solidarity mechanism”. Consequently, when one of the member countries is inundated with immigrants, other member countries will support some of the refugees in their own countries and provide financial support to the oppressed country.
THE FLOW OF IMMIGRANTS IS INCREASING TO EUROPE
The package, which also foresees accelerating the issuance of long-term permits after 3 years of legal residence in EU countries and integrating the beneficiaries of temporary protection status, also contemplates the right of long-term residents in the EU to move to another EU country with your family without additional work restrictions.
The package will be negotiated by the EP and the European Council in the next stage. The talks are expected to start after ministers from member states reach a consensus at the meeting of EU justice and interior ministers on June 8-9.
2022 was recorded as “the year the EU received an unprecedented level of irregular migration since the migration crisis”. In 2022, 330,000 irregular entries into the EU were made, which corresponds to an increase of 64 percent compared to the previous year. (AA)
