UN: Indian population will overtake China by 3 million

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) forecasts that India’s population will be “the most populous country in the world” by mid-year, surpassing China by around 3 million.

The UNFPA “State of World Population Report 2023” titled “8 Billion Lives, Infinite Possibilities: A Question of Rights and Choices” has been released. In the report, which states that India’s population will surpass China’s by about 3 million by mid-year, India’s population is estimated to reach 1.428 billion.

In the report, it was stated that 8 countries, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Tanzania, will account for half of the world’s projected population growth by 2050. It was noted that the population of India will overtake China for the first time since 1950, when the UN began collecting and publishing population data.

CHINESE POPULATION DECREASES FOR THE FIRST TIME

China’s population fell by 800,000 in 2022, the first time since 1961. According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics (UIB), the population of mainland China was 1 billion 412 million 600 thousand in 2021, while it was determined in 1,000 million 411 million 800 thousand in 2022.

In the report “World Population Prospects 2022” published by the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations, it was predicted that the population of China would enter a process of “absolute decline” from the beginning of 2023, while India’s population continues to rise, leaving China behind as the world’s most populous country.

The report states that China’s population is estimated to decline to 1 billion 317 million in 2050 and to 766 million by the end of the century. (AA)
