Syria’s diplomatic advance continues

Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal al-Miqdad met Tunisian Foreign Minister Nabil Ammar as part of his official contacts in Tunisia.

The Tunisian Ministry of Foreign Affairs published a written statement about the meeting. In the statement, it was stated that “Our Foreign Minister, Ammar, received the Syrian Foreign Minister, Mikdat, who paid a working visit to our country between April 17 and 19.”

Tunisia severed diplomatic relations with Syria about 11 years ago. Former Tunisian President Munsif al-Merzuki decided in 2012 to expel the Syrian ambassador in Tunisia.

Tunisia again had limited diplomatic representation with Syria in 2017 and air traffic between the two countries resumed at the end of 2018.
In a statement made by the Tunisian Presidency on February 9, it was stated that President Kays Said wanted to raise the level of diplomatic representation in Syria. In the statement issued on April 4, it was announced that President Said had ordered the start of procedures for the appointment of an ambassador to Syria. (AA)
